Thomas Tuchel teased Chelsea defender Thiago Silva for his energetic celebrations against Atletico Madrid this week in the Stamford Bridge stands, claiming the Brazilian “dresses like a 28-year-old”.

The Blues reached the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night thanks to a 2-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in west London, which rounded off a 3-0 victory on aggregate.

Silva was seen marshalling his side’s defence from the Stamford Bridge stands throughout the game and celebrated wildly with fellow unused team-mates Mason Mount and Jorginho in the seats when Emerson Palmieri scored the Blues’ vital second.

Chelsea manager Tuchel praised the unused trio for their support during the game before making a sly dig at Silva’s dress sense and antics.

Tuchel said in his post-match press conference: “All three of them, Mason, Jorgi and Thiago, were completely involved in the game and that makes them involved in the moment.

“I heard them during the game coaching and supporting the players. I had the same thing from Willy and Kepa on the bench.

“To create an atmosphere like this, you can rely on Thiago. He was so, so happy for Emerson to score like the other guys. He rans the stairs up and down and was dressed like a 28-year-old!”

Tuchel is now unbeaten in his first 13 matches in charge of Chelsea since taking over as the club’s head coach earlier this year but 36-year-old Silva has missed ten of those games due to a thigh problem.

Silva and Tuchel worked together at the German manager’s former club - Paris Saint-Germain - and the Chelsea manager claims the Brazilian defender is an important part of his side, but has yet to make an announcement on his future.

Tuchel added: “I know Thiago for many years now. We had a fantastic partnership in Paris, a completely reliable captain for me from the minute I stepped in.

“Once he is part of a team, he is 100% part of the team, 100% professional. He is a very emotional guy.

“On his contract, it is too early. Me and the club will make this decision together but if you look at the pictures, you can see how young he looks.”

Chelsea were drawn against FC Porto in the Champions League last-eight on Friday, with the winner of that match taking on either Real Madrid or Liverpool in the semi-finals.
