Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Jose Mourinho may raid his former club Porto one more time to complete his Chelsea squad for the forthcoming season. Mourinho is considering making an offer of around £5m for the little-known central defender Pedro Emanuel.

Jose Mourinho may raid his former club Porto one more time to complete his Chelsea squad for the forthcoming season. Mourinho is considering making an offer of around £5m for the little-known central defender Pedro Emanuel.

The 29-year-old, who was born in Angola but who holds a Portuguese passport, may not be the kind of acquisition to excite Chelsea fans. However, he has been effective for Porto where Mourinho used him in rotation with Ricardo Carvalho and Jorge Costa. Emanuel is highly regarded by Mourinho who would see him as ideal back-up for John Terry and William Gallas.

Mourinho had hoped to sign Phillipe Mexes but the former Auxerre defender wanted the guarantee of first-team football and joined Roma instead. He has also toyed with taking up Milan's offer to buy the 22-year-old Argentinian Fabricio Coloccini, but he prefers a more reliable and experienced player. Mourinho would also be interested in signing the former Porto player Jorge Andrade from Deportivo La Coruña but that is unlikely to happen.
