Despite dominating possession in the early stages, chances were rarely seen at Stamford Bridge with the pace of the game slow and much of the home side’s passing done in front of Palace’s defence.
But Chilwell found the breakthrough soon after half time and the Blues rarely let up thereafter, with the left-back noting manager Frank Lampard encouraged the team to show more creativity at the break.
“First half we were patient but didn’t take enough risks in the final third,” Chilwell told BT Sport after the match.
“We’ve got unbelievable talent up there and need to show it - second half we did that.”
The former Leicester man is one of a number of new signings this summer, and says there’s a common theme among the recent arrivals.
Some may take a little longer to settle in to life in London, but the aim is to challenge for top honours as soon as possible.
"I’ve heard the Premier League is very different [to the Bundesliga and Ligue 1] so it’ll take time to adjust. Everyone’s working hard, everyone put a shift in and it’s starting to bed in well.
“Talking to the other boys [who have signed], the reason we’ve come in is we think this team can win trophies. We need to work hard and keep putting in performances like today.”
As well as scoring the opener, Chilwell went on to assist Kurt Zouma for the second, as Chelsea went on to win 4-0.
