Mourinho was delighted with the performance of his players, who were second-best in the first half and went behind to an Antonio Rudiger header, only for Anthony Martial’s brace to put them on the brink of a famous win.
Barkley salvaged a point for Maurizio Sarri’s hosts, however, sparking a touchline fracas between Mourinho and Marco Ianni, the Chelsea assistant coach who celebrated vigorously in front of the away dugout.
“Fantastic game with a fantastic result for Chelsea and awful result for us, because when you are the best team, you want to win,” the United manager said, summing up his thoughts on a chaotic match.
“If somebody tells me before the game at Stamford Bridge you get a point, you say: ‘Okay, that’s good. It’s so difficult to win at Stamford Bridge, I think every team feels it as a positive result.
“But we were so much in control, we were so much the best team in the second half that I think we clearly deserve to win the match.”
United welcome Juventus to Old Trafford on Tuesday night and Mourinho believes his players can take positives from their Stamford Bridge performance forward into Tuesday night’s clash.
“If they focus on the performance they will be really happy with themselves, if they focus on the result they will be very, very disappointed,” he said.
“The work is tomorrow morning when we meet to train, is by one side to think about Juventus, because Chelsea is over and we only play them in a few months.”
