Chelsea relief as Emerson talks down injury scare: ‘It’s nothing serious’

The player was subbed off after just eight minutes into Italy’s 2-1 over Finland on Thursday

Chelsea fans can breathe a sigh of relief with the news that Emerson’s injury suffered on international duty with Italy is “nothing serious”, according to the player himself.

Following a collision with Finland and Norwich striker Teemu Pukki, Emerson limped off after just eight minutes, appearing to clutch his hamstring.

However, Italy boss Roberto Mancini confirmed after the game that the substitution was just precautionary, stating that “[the injury] was nothing serious, he stopped to ensure it didn’t get any worse.”

The Brazilian-born full-back also alleviated fears after the 2-1 win, taking to Twitter to reassure Chelsea fans of his condition.

“Very important victory today guys,” he tweeted. “Unfortunately I had a small injury, but it’s nothing serious. Let’s continue like this!”

This news will be welcomed by Frank Lampard, who has entrusted Emerson with the starting left-back spot at Chelsea ahead of Marcos Alonso in all four Premier league games so far.

The Blues have been hit hard by injuries at the start of this campaign, with Callum Hudson-Odoi, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Reece James and Antonio Rudiger all missing the opening games with long-term issues suffered last season.

N’Golo Kante had returned from absence, but has since missed the last two league games and France’s international squad with an ankle injury.

Mateo Kovacic also withdrew from the Croatia squad with an Achilles problem, and has been receiving treatment at Cobham.
