The Spain forward looked destined to move to the Bernabeu after his current club, Valencia, turned other clubs away because they were in advanced talks with Real Madrid.
Yet reports today suggest the proposed £36m deal has fallen through.
The news will alert Chelsea, as well as Manchester United, Barcelona and Manchester City, who are all reportedly interested in the 27-year-old.
The Euro 2008 top-scorer would prefer to stay in Spain but with Valencia in huge amounts of debt, a big offer from one of the English sides may convince the Spanish team to sell Villa abroad.
It is thought that Chelsea are prepared to pay around £40m.
