Liverpool edged to a gritty, if not altogether convincing, 2-0 win at Cardiff to return to the top of the Premier League table.
A tense start almost saw Neil Warnock’s side take the lead, courtesy of some fine play on the left-wing by Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, before Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah both missed gilt-edged chances to give Liverpool the lead.
But after 57 minutes, Gigi Wijnaldum thrashed home a well-worked set-play routine to break the deadlock.
Cardiff continued to apply the pressure with Sean Morrison heading over from all of five yards after a rare mistake from Alisson, who flapped at the corner.
However, the Cardiff centre-back then compounded his misery by needlessly manhandling Salah in the box with James Milner converting the penalty to confirm another crucial three points in the title race.
