From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

High-flying Burnley will play host to a Stoke City side under pressure to end their slide towards the bottom three.

Stoke have won just one game in six from a run of fixtures including Crystal Palace, Swansea and Brighton, and have the worst defensive record in the division, having conceded 35 goals. Manager Mark Hughes will feel that his job is on the line too, with some bookmakers offering odds as low as 2/1 for Hughes to be the next Premier League manager to lose his job.

Match preview

Scoring has not been a problem for Stoke, who have the most goals in the bottom half, but a perilous run of form has left them just three points above the relegation zone, and they have only picked up one away win all season. Frequent changes in central defence have not helped, with Bruno Martins Indi and Kevin Wimmer both failing to nail down a starting spot alongside the aging Ryan Shawcross.

Burnley, in contrast, are full of confidence at the moment, with thoughts at Turf Moor turning to a potential challenge for European football as their early form shows no sign of letting up. Five wins in seven Premier League games has left them level on points with Spurs, and just two points of the top four.

Their strong home form from last season has continued, picking up 14 points from eight home games so far, and Turf Moor will be a tough place to visit. Their squad depth has been tested in recent weeks, with Robbie Brady, Ben Mee and Matt Lowton all suffering from knee injuries in the past fortnight, but the latter two should be in with a shout of returning on Tuesday night. They have no suspensions, but Tom Heaton and Jonathan Walters remain long-term absentees.

Bruno Martins Indi is still out with the groin injury he suffered at the beginning of the month, as is Stephen Ireland with the broken leg he suffered in May. Indi’s absence leaves Stoke rather short in defence, so Hughes is likely to switch back to a back four, allowing Kurt Zouma to replace 18-year-old Tom Edwards on the right of defence. Joint top-scorer Peter Crouch may also return to the starting line-up.

Where can I watch it?

Highlights will be available in Match of the Day, at 22.45 on BBC1

It’s a big game for…

Chris Wood. After three goals in his first four games, the goals have rather dried up for Chris Wood in recent times, with just one goal in his last eight appearances for club and country. He will be hoping to exploit a fragile Stoke defence which has conceded 15 goals in the past six games, and been on the end of thrashings from Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs.

Wood will miss the service of Robbie Brady, who had been in good form until he was injured against Leicester City, but Scott Arfield deputised superbly with the winner against Watford and Johann Berg Gudmundsson has contributed an impressive five Premier League assists this season from the right wing.

Best stat…

Both of these teams are in the bottom three for passes completed in the Premier League – only West Brom (5,294) have completed fewer than Stoke (5,430) and Burnley (5,571).

Player to watch…

Xherdan Shaqiri. A shining light in a season when positive signs have been few and far between for Stoke, the Potters will need Shaqiri firing if they are to get anything from this match. He has scored or assisted nine of their eighteen league goals this season (four goals, five assists) – a goal tally the Swiss winger hasn’t bettered since his spell in the Bundesliga with Bayern Munich four seasons ago.

The 26-year-old will fancy his chances on the right flank against Stephen Ward, the 32-year-old who was embarrassed by Christian Eriksen at times during Republic of Ireland’s World Cup play-off loss against Denmark last month.
