Brighton vs Liverpool result: Player ratings as champions see off spirited hosts

Here’s how every player got on at the Amex on Wednesday evening

Brighton

Ryan – 6: Was not to blame for any of Liverpool’s goals, though he nearly gifted the visitors a fourth in added time with a fumbled save.

Lamptey – 7: Crossed well for Trossard’s goal and beat Robertson with a smart nutmeg shortly after the Scot’s arrival. Was a bright spark for much of the game.

Webster – 6: Looked very much motivated and made an important block to keep out Oxlade-Chamberlain in the first half.

Dunk – 7: Got back heroically to deny Salah his second of the evening early in the second half.

Burn – 5: Horribly miscued an attacking effort at the back post in the latter half, wasting a golden opportunity to draw his side level.

Propper – 7: Showed some nice touches in the Liverpool box. Was frequently involved in his team’s attacking play.

Stephens – 6: Was caught out in possession right on half-time, just after his side had scored, but was let off when Webster put in a solid block.

Gross – 7: Was one of Brighton’s most lively players from start to finish.

Mac Allister – 6: Was a little bit less impactful than his midfield team-mates, but not for a lack of trying.

Trossard – 8: Took his goal wonderfully on the half-volley, having made a smart call to hang back slightly at the last moment. Was arguably his side’s best player on an evening when everyone put in a shift.

Maupay – 7: Should’ve done better with a Trossard cross shortly before the hour mark, but worked hard to get in the right positions all night.

Liverpool

Alisson – 6: Had to be alert as Brighton attacked with verve, and generally was. Flapped at a corner midway through the second half, however. Could do nothing to deny Trossard.

Alexander-Arnold – 7: Has been a little bit up-and-down since the restart, but this was one of his finer performances.

Gomez – 6: Was largely diligent and a strong presence in his side’s box, though he cynically brought down Connolly late on.

Van Dijk – 7: Was solid for the vast majority of the match and contributed some key defensive headers throughout.

Williams – 7: Nineteen-year-old was full of energy, as you’d expect, putting in a promising performance. Was replaced at half-time, however, potentially due to a booking he picked up.

Keita – 8: Pounced well on some sloppy Brighton defending to assist his side’s first goal. Was omnipresent throughout until being replaced on the hour mark.

Henderson – 7: Struck the ball terrifically for Liverpool’s second, his effort spinning tantalisingly away from Ryan.

Wijnaldum – 6: Was the least involved of the Reds’ midfield three, but the Dutchman put on a competent display.

Salah – 9: Showed frequent flashes of his full ability. Was clinical for his side’s first goal and reacted well to head in his second of the evening at the near post from a corner.

Firmino – 6: As ever, a key part of Liverpool’s attacking moves. As often, unable to find a finishing touch.

Oxlade-Chamberlain – 7: Worked tirelessly on the left, as if he had a real point to prove to manager Jurgen Klopp. Was nevertheless substituted on the hour mark.

Robertson – 6: Explosive entrance in the second half was somewhat undermined when the Scot was nutmegged by Lamptey, but the left-back reacted well and notched an assist later on.

Mane – 6: Was booked for a stray arm on Lamptey within minutes of coming on for Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Fabinho – 6: Didn’t take long to find his range, successfully seeking out Salah with an inch-perfect crossfield ball moments after stepping onto the pitch.
