Brighton have asked police to investigate whether “monkey chants” were aimed at their players by Burnley fans during Saturday’s goalless draw at Turf Moor.
The full-back Gaetan Bong was booed throughout the contest in the wake of his dispute with the former Burnley forward Jay Rodriguez. Bong accused Rodriguez, who now plays for West Brom, of racial abuse during a match in January, but an independent commission found that although his complaint was made in good faith, the accusation could not be proven.
The Brighton manager Chris Hughton called the booing “shameful” while the Football Association said it was “unacceptable”.
Brighton have now asked Sussex Police to liaise with the Lancashire constabulary in order to establish whether monkey chants were directed at Bong and other visiting players.
