Blackburn Rovers have had a bid for the Netherlands defender Andre Ooijer accepted by PSV Eindhoven. It is understood the fee for the 32-year-old is in the region of £2.1m.

The Blackburn manager, Mark Hughes, said: "We have been looking to add to our central defensive options all this summer. Ooijer has great experience. He has played at the highest level and would be a real asset for us."

Ooijer has been a long-term target for Hughes and his departure from PSV was virtually guaranteed when he made himself unavailable for last weekend's match against NEC Nijmegen.

The PSV coach, Ronald Koeman, explained the player's absence by saying: "He indicated he was not mentally fit and felt incapable of playing."

In attack, Blackburn's Benni McCarthy is being tipped to make a big impact in the Premiership by his team-mate Aaron Mokoena, who said: "Benni is a goalscorer and can make things happen for the team."

Andy Todd is clear to play against Everton tonight after winning his appeal for wrongful dismissal at Fratton Park, while Zurab Khizanishvili has resumed training after a groin strain.
