Bellamy sets his sights on title in first season at Liverpool
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Craig Bellamy completed his move to the club he supported as a boy yesterday. The 26-year-old Wales international signed a four-year deal with Liverpool to end his brief spell at Blackburn Rovers, who are believed to have accepted a fee of around £6m.
"Being a Liverpool supporter myself, at the start of every season it's the League title that you're looking to win," Bellamy said. "Being top of this League is something that Liverpool grew used to in the '70s and '80s, but it hasn't happened for a while, and that has to change.
"Even from the outside looking in, you could tell that things were heading in the right direction under Mr [Rafael] Benitez, and if we can improve on what we did last year and move two steps on, hopefully we can win the title."
Police have launched a formal investigation into allegations of financial irregularities at Derby County. Suggestions of impropriety first surfaced in April when police began a review of the circumstances surrounding a takeover of the club in October 2003, centred on how a £375,000 commission fee was allegedly shared out.
Niall Quinn and his consortium could secure a deal to take over Sunderland within days. It is understood further talks took place yesterday to sort out final details. The players will return for pre-season training on Monday with coach Kevin Richardson having been asked to take charge in the absence of a new manager.
