Joel Campbell opened the scoring for the Gunners after a slow start form both teams, with the Costa Rica striker getting on to the end of a Mesut Özil pass as the Germany international recorded his 16th assist of the season.
But Sunderland hit back and they were level before the break when Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud turned a free-kick into his own net.
The France international would make amends though as he put Arsenal back in front after half-time, and Aaron Ramsey sealed the victory with an effort in the final minutes of the encounter.
