Chelsea's decision to appoint Antonio Conte "makes no sense" according to the club's former striker Chris Sutton.
The Blues announced on Monday that the current Italy coach will become the club's next permanent manager following Euro 2016.
The former Juventus boss, who won Serie A every year he was in Turin, has a reputation for being a disciplinarian.
Sutton, who played for Chelsea during the 1999/2000 season, is not convinced his former club have made the right call.
"If the players have downed tools before there is every suggestion that, with Conte being a similar type to Mourinho, they will down tools again," Sutton told BBC Radio 5 live.
"If he comes in and starts hitting the players with a whip, are they going to respond?
"Bringing in a similar type of manager to Mourinho in Conte doesn't make any sense to me."
Chelsea have been looking for a manager since firing Jose Mourinho just months after the Portuguese boss led the club to the Premier League title.
