Embattled winger Angel Di Maria will still be a Manchester United player next season, Louis van Gaal insisted this weekend.

The Argentine has endured a tough start to life in English football after his British-record £59.7m switch from Real Madrid last summer.

A torrid run of poor form and his dismissal in the 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Arsenal has prompted some to question his future at Old Trafford in recent weeks.

But Van Gaal said: "I think he'll stay. His reaction and attitude after the defeat and the red card has been good."

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has faced criticism of his own as United's chances of securing a Champions League spot dwindle.

However the Dutchman was forced to confirm the club's owners, the Glazer family, were 'pleased' with his management.

"I have spoken with the Glazers and because of those discussions I am here now," he said. "I think they are pleased with my way of managing the club."

Di Maria was forced to move home after an attempted burglary at his Cheshire house while his domestic form plummeted.

"Despite that incident, he is very pleased to be here at Manchester United," Van Gaal said.

"I am always compassionate about a player's needs and although I cannot say anything for definite about his future, I don't think he will move."
