At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

“It’s about momentum and we’ve thrown it out of the window,” said Pardew. “We had that momentum and everyone was feeling good with a victory appearing on the cards but that is what the Premier League does, unfortunately; you have to be consistent to get the win you need. This is a place where we need to crank it up all the time and keep the pressure on. Once we scored, we went down a gear and that is sometimes enough to give hope to the opposition. The whole team could have done more defensively.”
Newcastle could have moved briefly to second place in the Premier League if they had won at St James’ Park. Despite leading twice through Loïc Rémy, they were beaten 3-2 by Steve Bruce’s newly promoted side. Rémy, who could have grabbed a third goal and a point in injury time, said: “I think we have good quality in this team, we can finish near the top in this league. We have to win this type of game to have a chance of that, though.
“We are very disappointed because at home it is important we win for the fans and for the confidence. We didn’t do that and that’s why the gaffer spoke to everyone afterwards to say we have to win at home. It was quiet in the dressing room, it was the first game we have lost at home. Everyone knows we can deliver and win at home; we have to make sure we do that more.
“When we conceded the first goal we stopped playing, made mistakes, made wrong passes; I don’t know why that happened. We have to change that. We have to keep the ball better and stay confident all through the game.”
Robbie Brady, Ahmed Elmohamady and Sone Aluko scored for Hull and Bruce said: “We’ve got to win 10 games this season. We’ve set ourselves that target at the start of the season. You’re going to draw five or six as well and that’s usually enough. If we stay injury-free, we look a fairly decent outfit.”
