Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Yeovil Town are savouring the achievement of securing a place in the Football League after winning the Nationwide Conference title on Saturday.

The Glovers knew they were champions prior to their televised visit to Doncaster Rovers, after Chester City dropped points in a 2-2 home draw with Woking, and they celebrated with a 4-0 thrashing of the South Yorkshire team.

Darren Way, Michael McIndoe (from the penalty spot), Lee Johnson (the son of their manager, Gary Johnson) and Kevin Gall were the scorers for Yeovil, while Doncaster's Paul Barnes saw a late penalty saved by Chris Weale.

"I'm so proud of my players for the way they have won the title in style," Johnson Snr, the former coach of Latvia, said. He has challenged his squad to repeat their promotion-winning performance in the Third Divsion next season.

Despite their heavy defeat, Rovers sealed their place in the play-offs, because Hereford United lost at Halifax Town. They will be joined by Chester City, Morecambe and Dagenham & Redbridge in the two-leg play-off semi-finals, which take place on 1 and 5 May. The final will be staged at Stoke City on 10 May.

Accrington Stanley claimed their place in the Conference next term by winning the UniBond League title on Saturday. Watched by a crowd of 2,263 at their Crown ground, the reformed ex-Football League club beat Altrincham 3-1 with two goals from Lutel James and one from Steve Halford.

Shaun Teale, the Burscough player-manager, converted an injury-time penalty to give his UniBond League side a 1-0 home win over Aylesbury United of the Ryman League and a 2-1 aggregate victory in the FA Trophy semi-finals.

In the final on 18 May, to be played at the home of Teale's former club Aston Villa, Burscough will face Tamworth, who needed an extra-time goal from Scott Rickards to draw 1-1 at their Dr Martens League rivals Havant & Waterlooville and go through 2-1 on aggregate. James Taylor had put the home side ahead.
