Here, we take a closer look at the player who can now expect to find himself at the centre attention...
1. He joined Celtic from Belgian side Germinal Beerschot for £900,000 in July 2011, signing a four-year contract, and has made 60 appearances for the club.
2. Born in Nairobi, he first moved to Europe when he joined Swedish club Helsingborg in 2007 before moving to Germinal the following year.
3. A defensive midfielder who can also play in defence, he made his Kenya debut at the age of 15 in a friendly against Nigeria.
4. He has been capped 23 times.
5. The 21-year-old is the first player in the club's history to wear the No 67 shirt, in honour of the Lisbon Lions. He said: "After reading the club's history, I have chosen 67 as my squad number to show appreciation to the 1967 squad."
6. Celtic are believed to have rejected an offer of more than £8million from Queens Park Rangers for him in the summer.
7. The two Manchester clubs and Liverpool have watched him regularly this season and he may yet prove one of the most sought-after players during the January transfer window. Gary Neville last night said: "That display has put him right in the shop window and Celtic will do very well to hold on to him."
8. Neil Lennon valued him at £25m after it was confirmed that he rejected the offer of a new contract last month. Lennon said: "But his feet are here and they won't be going anywhere unless we say so."
9. His brother is McDonald Mariga, who won the Champions League with Inter in 2010 and is currently on loan at Parma. Other brothers Thomas and Sylvester play in the Kenyan Premier League.
10. His father Noah was a left winger who played for Kenya in the 1980s.
