Team news: Cahill close to agreeing new contract

The club have revealed that midfielder Tim Cahill is close to agreeing a new contract at Goodison Park. "We are hopeful of concluding an extension to Tim's current deal and put pen to paper on a new four-year contract before he departs for the World Cup," said chief executive Robert Elstone.

Preston

The manager, Darren Ferguson, has made his first buy of the summer by signing 26-year-old Scunthorpe United striker Paul Hayes on a three-year contract. "We've done it quick which is the best way to do business and he'll be a great free transfer," Ferguson said.

Stoke City

Potters manager Tony Pulis has spoken of the dressing room unrest within his squad which was prevalent during this season at the Britannia Stadium. "You get this 'me, me, me' situation and it can kill the dressing room," he said. "We'll be working very hard to get one or two of the players out, and bring one or two fresh ones in."

Football Association chairman Lord Triesman has promised that Wembley will never suffer from a poor playing surface again, after admitting mistakes. "We shouldn't have let this happen and we will have an exceptional pitch," he said. The stadium plays host to Saturday's FA Cup final.

Chris Hughton is preparing for a season of austerity after the club released a statement telling fans there would be no investment in the squad this summer, and outlining the club's finances after it made an operating loss for the last two financial years of almost £70m.

The Football League has voted in favour of accepting parachute payments from the Premier League over a four year period instead of two years. The vote, conducted at Walsall's Banks's Stadium, means that clubs will now receive £12m a year for four years rather than £16m a year for two years after suffering relegation.
