Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It's rarely dull being a Manchester City fan, but even by our standards, the 2008/09 season was an eventful one.

Our previous owner was found guilty of corruption and received a jail sentence, we became the richest club in the world, and smashed the British transfer record for Robinho. Oh, and ruined the game of football apparently, according to the hysterical press at least. Despite the hype, the season on the pitch turned out to be a fairly mundane affair. Our record at Eastlands was impressive, but our away form was dire, to say the least. Manager Mark Hughes has polarised fans, and there is much debate regarding his future. A decent run in the Uefa Cup masked some of the side's deficiencies, although inevitably we were knocked out in the latter stages (City just don't win quarter-finals, it's science fact). Further rebuilding is clearly required in the summer, and luckily we have the resources to do it. Who is entrusted with the task remains to be seen. One suspects it may not be Hughes.

Which team were your best opponents?

Hamburg caused us numerous problems at the Nordbank Arena and but for Shay Given could've beaten us by a cricket score.

Who would you most like your team to sign this summer?

We continue to be linked with David Villa and, even though he patently doesn't want to come to England, he would be a marked improvement on Felipe Caicedo.

What was the weirdest/funniest moment of your season?

In the derby at Eastlands, a ten-year-old ballboy endeared himself to most of Manchester by deliberately launching the ball full into Ronaldo's face.

Mark out of 10 for the season?
