A player was sent off in the Norwegian second division for calling an opponent "gay".

Simen Juklerod of Baerum SK, who play in the 1. Divisjon, was given a straight red card by referee Anders Gjermshus for abusing a Sandnes Ulf player during the 3-2 defeat on Sunday.

The Norwegian league is attempting to toughen up their approach to homophobic language, with head of referees Terje Hauge saying that using the word "in an insulting or offensive manner" would result in a red card.

Footage of the incident shows Juklerod looking stunned at being sent off as his side prepared to take a free-kick - the game was level at 2-2 at the time.

It is unclear which player the abuse was directed at, though Baerum players surrounded the official after he made the decision.

"There was a second I was not thinking, and said the second word (gay), yes," said Juklerod. "Of course it's completely lame. But I still think that's not a red card."

The midfield denied using any other form of offensive language or expletive, but his club are investigating the incident.
