Ryan Shawcross has been told by Fabio Capello's backroom staff that he has the full backing of the England manager when he turns up for international duty today after his challenge on Aaron Ramsey.
It is an unfortunate coincidence that Shawcross' first training session in the England team will be at Arsenal's training ground this morning, just 48 hours after the Stoke defender's tackle on Ramsey left the Arsenal midfield with a fractured tibia and fibula. Ramsey underwent a successful operation on Saturday night.
Shawcross' tackle was described as "horrendous" and "unacceptable" by Arsenal's manager Arsène Wenger and the defender was shown a red card by referee Peter Walton. Replays showed that the Stoke player made a genuine attempt to play the ball.
Despite Shawcross leaving the pitch in tears, he was told that Capello still wants him to join up with the squad for Wednesday's game against Egypt.
Shawcross, 22, is the stand-out name in a squad that is missing Glen Johnson, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Gary Cahill and the newly-retired Wayne Bridge from among the defenders alone.
The most notable omission among the midfielders is Joe Cole. However, Capello is understood to believe that the Chelsea man can still make his World Cup squad in May.
Ben Foster, Tom Huddlestone and Darren Bent are the three players who have been left out of this week's squad having featured in Capello's last England squad – for the game against Brazil in Doha in November. Capello has picked five strikers again, reinstating Carlton Cole who was injured for the Brazil game.
