The Republic of Ireland football team's assistant manager is said to have thrown a punch at the fan during an altercation.
Irish police said officers went to a hotel on the east coast of Ireland, a few miles outside the centre of Dublin, after being called.
“Gardai attended the scene of a minor incident at a hotel in Portmarnock this afternoon. We are fully investigating,” said a spokesman for the police.
The alleged assault is said to have taken place after a fan approached Keane, the former Manchester United midfielder.
“One guy was reading Roy's book and wanted him to sign it. I think Roy told him no and then there were words exchanged,” a witness told the Irish Mirror. “It all just kicked off from there. There was lots of roaring and shouting after.
“An ambulance was called and your man was taken away. The players were coming in and out of the bar before and then they were called in to a private room. Everybody in the bar is talking about it. You don't see something like that every day.“
Keane was with the Republic of Ireland squad for a training session before the team flies to Scotland for European Cup qualifying match.
No arrests have been made but one man was, according to a reports, taken to hospital for treatment.
The Football Association of Ireland said in a statement: “Roy Keane called the Gardai following the incident.
“The manager, Martin O'Neill, and the FAI are fully aware of the circumstances surrounding this event, and the assistant manager has their full support.”
