Not that they gave Gareth Southgate, their manager, a comfortable afternoon. Yakubu Aiyegbeni saw his 15th-minute penalty saved and their centre-back Ugo Ehiogu limped off injured.
Wednesday's Chris Brunt, a product of Boro's academy, then struck the crossbar for Wednesday before Ray Parlour broke up a home attack in midfield and picked out the run of Malcolm Christie, who put Boro ahead.
The Owls were level two minutes into the second half when Steven MacLean was fouled by Parlour and Brunt scored from the spot. Brunt hit the post before Yakubu made up for his penalty miss by scoring the winner from a poor defensive header.
The Manchester City midfielder Claudio Reyna scored the only goal of the game in his first pre-season friendly to hand Stuart Pearce's side victory over Bradford City at Valley Parade.
Tottenham also gave outings to three players who had been at the World Cup as their Select XI won 2-0 away to Cambridge City. Didier Zokora, the Ivory Coast midfielder, played his first 45 minutes for the club, the England winger Aaron Lennon returned to action and the South Korea full-back Lee Young-Pyo marked his return to club football with an excellent goal. Reading warmed up for their first season in the top flight with a 1-1 draw against Swindon at the County Ground. They led after 30 minutes when Leroy Lita produced a brilliant turn and finish, but the home side levelled four minutes before the break with a penalty by Christian Roberts.
Fulham drew 0-0 against Real Madrid in Austria. Already without David Beckham and Ronaldo, new coach Fabio Capello also saw Antonio Cassano carried off. Jonathan Woodgate started for Real, while new signings Jimmy Bullard and Franck Queudrue played for Fulham. Arsenal's Jose Antonio Reyes was reported as saying yesterday that he wanted to move to Real.
