Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Reyna was in the Rangers side that secured a Uefa Cup fourth-round place with a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory over Paris Saint-Germain in France on Thursday night. He arrived back in Glasgow shortly before 4am to be picked up by a driver, who sped him down to Wearside to complete contract negotiations and undergo a medical. One hour's sleep later, he signed a five-year deal that was pushed through ahead of the noon deadline, and he is now available for tomorrow's Premiership game with Chelsea.
Liverpool's Dietmar Hamann is hopeful that his three-match ban will be overturned early next week. The German picked up the ban after a red card for a two-footed tackle on Sunderland's Bernt Haas. Television replays showed he did not make contact with the defender.
Liverpool have had a positive response to their appeal and have been summoned to a Football Association hearing on Monday, where they will put their case for leniency for Hamann.
Chelsea's managing director, Colin Hutchinson, has announced he will retire at the end of the season after 15 years at Stamford Bridge. The 58-year-old has decided to leave the Premiership club for personal reasons and will take a break from football.
Hutchinson played a key role in recruiting the current Chelsea manager, Claudio Ranieri, as well as his predecessors Gianluca Vialli and Ruud Gullit. His departure next summer will make Ranieri's position at the Premiership club less secure.
The Leicester City manager, Dave Bassett, has confirmed the former Sheffield Wednesday player Peter Shirtliff as the reserve-team coach and the ex-Plymouth manager David Kemp as chief scout.
Crystal Palace have signed the defender Kit Symons from Fulham for £400,000. The Welsh international defender has agreed personal terms and will go straight into the squad to play Manchester City.
Rangers have told Wolves they have just 48 hours to make an acceptable offer for Kenny Miller. The Ibrox club have turned down a number of offers in excess of the £2m they paid Hibernian for last year. The Scottish international's three-month loan spell at Molineux is about to end.
The Wimbledon defender Mark Williams has fractured his leg for the second time this season and will be out for at least six weeks.
Hibernian have signed the Ecuador international striker Eduardo Hurtado from Argentinos Juniors of Buenos Aires.
The Brescia midfielder Josep Guardiola faces a ban from football after a second positive test for nandrolone. The 30-year-old has been suspended since his first positive test on 21 October.
The Germany coach, Rudi Völler, has ended speculation over his future by agreeing a new contract until the conclusion of the 2006 World Cup.
