1953: Born July 26 in Aschaffenburg, West Germany.
1972: Begins playing career with local club Viktoria Aschaffenburg, later moving to second division side FC Saarbrucken.
1976: Transfers to Hamburg, where he spends the rest of his playing career.
1977: Makes international debut for West Germany. Goes on to score three goals in 43 games.
1980: Is part of the Germany squad that wins the European Championship.
1983: Scores the only goal as Hamburg beat Juventus to win the European Cup final.
1986: Retires from playing following an injury and becomes general manager at Hamburg, before going on to take a similar role at a number of other clubs.
1995: Is named Hamburg manager having been assistant under previous boss Benno Mohlmann.
1997: Sacked as Hamburg boss and goes on to have short stints at the helm of Nurnberg, Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt.
2001: Takes over at Stuttgart.
2003: Leads Stuttgart to second place in the Bundesliga.
2004: Becomes Bayern Munich boss.
2005: Leads Bayern to a domestic league and cup double, a feat he goes on to repeat the following season.
2007: January - Sacked as Bayern manager with club fourth in the Bundesliga.
June - Becomes Wolfsburg manager.
2009: Leads Wolfsburg to their first and, to date, only Bundesliga title - then moves to Schalke at the end of the season.
2010: Schalke finish as runners-up in Magath's first season, but he is sacked midway through the following season with the team in poor form.
2011: March - Returns to Wolfsburg just 24 hours after leaving Schalke, but cannot recreate his earlier success and leaves in October 2012.
2014: February 14 - Named manager of Fulham.
