Platini eager to avert Hillsborough clash

Uefa president Michel Platini has promised Liverpool that European football's governing body is doing all that it can to avoid scheduling a Champions League tie on the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

Liverpool are scheduled to play the second leg of their quarter-final clash on 15 April, the same day that will mark 20 years since 96 Liverpool fans lost their lives.

Platini released a press statement earlier today stating Uefa's understanding of the significance of the day.

It read: "Uefa would like to clarify the situation regarding reports suggesting that [Uefa have] rejected a request by Liverpool FC not to play their Uefa Champions League second leg quarter-final match on Wednesday, April 15, the 20th anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster.

"We are aware of the huge significance of the April 15 date for both Liverpool and their fans, and that is why we will do our utmost to make sure that the club does not have to play its Champions League second leg match on that day."

Platini continued, "I have been in regular correspondence with Liverpool on this matter for some time now and fully sympathise with the club's feelings as to the importance of respecting the date of April 15 for those who lost their lives at Hillsborough.

"This being the 20th anniversary of that tragic disaster in 1989 makes it even more relevant and we will take this into account.”

The draw for the quarter-finals of the Champions League takes place on Friday.
