Football Conference side Wrexham FC are looking for a new manager to replace recently departed Andy Morrell, but they have taken the rather unusual method of asking for applications for the job through a page on their club website.

Advertised as “the third oldest professional football club in existence” and bringing “the Welsh town to national and international acclaim”, the club are asking for potential candidates to send in a CV and covering letter in order to be considered.

The job summary reads: “Established in 1864, Wrexham Football Club is the third oldest professional football club in existence and has brought the Welsh town to national and international acclaim. As the only fully professional football club in North Wales, Wrexham Football Club has a large, passionate fan base.

“In its 150th anniversary year, an exciting opportunity has arisen for the right candidate to be an integral part of the future growth of Wrexham Football Club as first team manager.

“This role will provide a fantastic opportunity to work within a vibrant club with excellent facilities both at the Glyndwr University Racecourse Stadium and Colliers Park training ground.”

Interested parties are asked to contact the club secretary Geraint Parry, but this has led to comparisons to the popular football simulation game, Football Manager. The regular applications that clubs are inundated with from wannabee managers whose previous experience comes from the screen rather than the training ground is nothing new, although some budding head coaches can take heart from 21-year-old Azerbaijan-born, Sweden-based student Vugar Huseynzade.

Huseynzade was appointed as Azerbaijan league side FC Baku’s manager in 2012 despite his entire managing knowledge coming from the game that is essentially a high-tech database.
