Robbie Fowler is on the lookout for a new club after North Queensland Fury admitted defeat in their quest to retain his services.
Fowler was the Fury's marquee signing for their maiden season in the A-league last year, however, financial problems meant the Townsville-based club were forced to release the 35-year-old from his contract.
That raised the interest of rivals Perth Glory and Sydney FC who have reportedly made offers for Fowler.
With Fury unable to match the size of those deals their interim chief executive Archie Fraser confirmed they had pulled out of the race to sign the former Liverpool striker.
"The club has discussed with Fowler's management the level we can go to to have him here next season," Fraser told the Townsville Bulletin.
"We have been surprised to learn that the indications are other clubs are offering higher than his previous contract with the Fury.
"It is disappointing for us and for our fans but we have to acknowledge that it is most likely he will be playing elsewhere and we need to now move on."
Perth Glory have reportedly offered Fowler 750,000 Australian dollars to join the west coast club and coach Dave Mitchell is hopeful of completing what would be their highest-profile signing.
"He's very high on our list and while Sydney have the inside running we really want to show him what we can offer him," Mitchell told the West Australian.
"We know he wants to remain in Australia and he'd be a huge capture for any Australian club.
"He'd put bums on seats for sure. He's still a fantastic player and a born goalscorer. He's somebody I'm sure the FFA would like to keep in the country."
