Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Roberto Di Matteo's remarkable stint as interim Chelsea manager has yielded just another 12 definite months in the job as the club are set to appoint him as their permanent manager this week.
After winning the FA Cup and Champions League, Di Matteo has had to wait almost a month for a decision on his future and, even then, the contract is a two-year deal with an option to terminate the agreement next May.
Speculation remains about Roman Abramovich's desire to appoint Pep Guardiola, who is taking a year-long sabbatical from management following his resignation from Barcelona.
But Di Matteo has at least a season to continue his work, helped by the captures of Eden Hazard for £35m and Marko Marin from Werder Bremen this summer.
Crewe's Powell lines up United move
Manchester United are in talks to sign Crewe's England Under-18 international Nick Powell.
The Crewe manager, Steve Davis, believes the 18-year-old's agent is negotiating over a move and United head a group of interested clubs.
Davis said: "Nick is still with us, but I am sure talks are still ongoing with his agent and clubs. I envisage him leaving, but if it doesn't happen then we would welcome him back."
Agony in final for Maradona
Diego Maradona saw his Al Wasl side throw away their only chance of silverware after two needless two red cards for the Dubai side in the GCC Champions League final second leg on Sunday. "I don't regret anything I did this season," he said.
