Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Bolton Wanderers defender Zat Knight has made a public appeal to his friend Shaun Wright-Phillips to consider manager Owen Coyle's offer of a move from Manchester City to the Reebok Stadium this week.
The clubs have agreed a £2.5m fee for the former England international, but Wright-Phillips is understood to be weighing up other options from Queen's Park Rangers and Stoke City.
Knight said: "He [Wright-Phillips] is the sort of player we'd love to have. Shaun's a good friend of mine and I really hope he chooses Bolton. We try and go down the wings here and that's what he can do. He's been to quite a few games and I spoke to him after Sunday's game [against Manchester City] and he seemed impressed. Hopefully, we've turned his head a bit."
Olympic Stadium decision is upheld
An independent inquiry into the decision to award West Ham United the Olympic Stadium has concluded the bidding process was not compromised.
Forensic accountants from Moore Stephens concluded that the Olympic Park Legacy Company director Dionne Knight had no influence on the OPLC's internal stadium processes or access to any sensitive material or papers.
Second strike set after pay talks fail
The Spanish football league and the players' union (AFE) have again failed to agree an end to a dispute over unpaid wages that has halted the start of the season.
After four meetings in a week, AFE spokesman Luis Gil said: "I understand people want to see football but you have to think about the players who are having a bad time. I would like to be more optimistic, but I can't." A second strike is planned this weekend for Spain's top two divisions.
Kyrgiakos signs for Wolfsburg
Defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos has joined Bundesliga side Wolfsburg on a two-year contract. Liverpool have not revealed whether they have received a fee for the 32-year-old Greek defender who made 49 appearances for the Reds, scoring three goals, after signing from AEK Athens in 2009.
