Michael Carrick looks likely to miss England’s friendlies against Chile and Germany with an Achilles injury despite completing a full 90 minutes for Manchester United against Arsenal yesterday. “I got through it but it doesn’t look too good,” said Carrick. Team-mate Danny Welbeck is also expected to pull out.
Women’s football: Arsenal and Birmingham close in on last eight
Arsenal Ladies are close to reaching their 12th straight Champions League quarter-finals after a 3-0 last 16 first-leg win at home to Glasgow City on Saturday. Birmingham Ladies won the first leg of their tie 2-0 away against Russian side FK Zorkiy. The second legs will both take place on Wednesday.
Italian match abandoned after early substitutions
An Italian third-tier match was called off yesterday after Nocerina, having allegedly received death threats from their fans, were reduced to six men by injuries after only 21 minutes. The southern derby at Salernitana began 40 minutes late and Nocerina made three substitutions in the first two minutes.
Milan’s winless run goes on as Roma are denied
Milan’s poor season – their worst start to a campaign since 1981 – continued with a goalless draw at bottom club Chievo yesterday, as both sides had a man sent off. Their winless run now extends to six matches in all competitions. Serie A leaders Roma drew 1-1 at home with Sassuolo, who equalised in stoppage time.
World Cup: £25 delivery charge for all Brazil finals tickets
Fifa has announced that supporters will have to pay a $41 (£25.60) delivery charge for their tickets for the 2014 World Cup finals – or they can pick them up for free in Brazil. The price was decided “to guarantee the same conditions for all fans irrespective of where they live”.
