Football in Brief: Allen takes reins at Meadow Lane
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The 45-year-old, who becomes County's eighth manager in 18 months, was working without a contract at Underhill and has agreed a one-year deal with County. He replaces Paul Ince at Meadow Lane after the former England international departed nine days ago. "Martin knows what it means to be successful at this level," chairman Ray Trew said. Allen's first game in charge will be at Yeovil tonight.
Sturridge wants Chelsea starts
Daniel Sturridge, having revelled in a starting role since joining Bolton on loan, is unlikely to be content with returning to life on the bench when he goes back to Chelsea next season.
The 20-year-old has scored six goals in eight appearances since moving north but, with Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba still appearing to be Chelsea's main strikers, Sturridge may find opportunities limited. He said: "I hope [my future is at Chelsea] but it's obviously up to the club. I want to play regular first-team football. If I can play first-team football at Chelsea then great, but I don't want to be on the bench."
Insult backfires on Ibrahimovic
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been banned for three of Milan's six remaining Serie A matches for insulting a linesman.
The incident occurred near the end of Milan's 2-1 win over Fiorentina on Sunday. "I was only angry with myself," the Swedish international said. "If I offended anyone I'm sorry."
Part of the ban was due to accumulated cards, as Ibrahimovic was returning from a two-match ban for punching a defender in the stomach last month. That penalty was reduced on appeal and Milan will appeal against this one.
Robben ban a jolt for Jonker
The Bayern Munich midfielder Arjen Robben has been banned for two matches and will miss the game against Bayer Leverkusen that could decide if Bayern qualify for the Champions League.
Robben's absence leaves interim coach Andries Jonker without a key player for his first match in charge. "I am not pleased but we will find a solution," he said.
Robben was sent off after the final whistle for insulting the referee following Bayern's 1-1 draw at Nuremberg.
Coach Louis van Gaal was sacked after the game, with his assistant Jonker handed the reins.
