From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A Manchester United fan today denied throwing a coin at Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy during last month's derby.

Adam Teese, 26, of Nelstrop Road North, Stockport, Greater Manchester, pleaded not guilty to "throwing a missile" on to the pitch during the Carling Cup semi-final on January 27.

Bellamy fell to the ground at Old Trafford after he was struck by a coin in the 50th minute as he went to take a corner.

Teese, who has held a season ticket at the club for eight years, spoke only to enter his plea and confirm his name and address during the hearing at Trafford Magistrates Court.

There was a massive police presence at the game, after trouble flared during the first leg.

A plastic bottle also thrown from the crowd narrowly missed Welsh forward Bellamy.

United won the match 3-1, giving them a 4-3 aggregate victory.

Teese will next appear at the court for a trial on May 13, which is expected to last two days.
