Dream Teams: Aston Villa
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Aston Villa are the last of the present Premier League top six to be honoured with a Dream Team, but their absence up until this point is no reflection of their standing in the English and European game.
The club was founded in 1874 and fourteen years later would become founder members of the Football League and, another 104 years later, the Premier League.

In between those two key dates, they won seven league titles and seven FA Cups and their crowning achievement came in 1982 when they beat Bayern Munich to lift the European Cup.
On top of all their silverware, the club has also contributed more players - 67 - to the England national side than any other team and has the honour of being referenced by Philip Larkin and the satirical comedy Yes, Minister.
Five of this Dream team have played for England - including Gareth Barry - but which other Villa internationals deserve to be included and is it right that Barry takes his place ahead of legends like Charlie Aitken?
If Gareth Barry's transfer has turned you off football (at least until August), then join in the debate and help us look for summer sporting distractions.
