Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Damien Comolli has left his role as Liverpool's director of football by mutual consent, the club confirmed this morning.
The Frenchman joined Liverpool as a director of football strategy in November 2010, with his role redefined in March last year.
During that time he has overseen a number of high-profile signings, including the club-record £35million acquisition of Andy Carroll from Newcastle, while he also survived a change of manager when Kenny Dalglish returned to the club to replace Roy Hodgson.
His time at Anfield has come to an end now, though, with a club statement from principal owner John Henry reading: "We are grateful for all of Damien's efforts on behalf of Liverpool and wish him all the best for the future."
Chairman Tom Werner added: "The club needs to move forward and we now have a huge game on Saturday. It is important that everyone joins us in supporting the manager and gets behind Kenny and the team and focuses on a strong finish to the season."
Comolli himself, who has also worked for Arsenal and Tottenham, said: "I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to work at Liverpool and am happy to move on from the club and back to France for family reasons. I wish the club all the best for the future."
"I had a fantastic working and personal relationship with Damien since he came here," said manager Kenny Dalglish.
"It is disappointing but I suppose there is not much in football which comes as a surprise."

"It is disappointing but I suppose there is not much in football which comes as a surprise."
Earlier in his career, the 39-year-old Comolli had held a similar post at Tottenham.
He was heralded for securing deals for players such as Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Dimitar Berbatov but, much like his time at Liverpool, not all his dealings were well thought of.
The likes of David Bentley and Adel Taarabt were never able to make their mark at White Hart Lane and former manager Martin Jol was outspoken about his uneasy relationship with Comolli.
Dalglish added: "He has been really helpful in every transfer target we've gone for.
"Everyone who has come into the club since Damien has been here was of my choice.
"Once I made the choice who I wanted Damien went away and did a fantastic job of bringing them in.
"It is sad to see anyone leave the football club and he goes with my best wishes and hopefully it is not long before we meet again.
"We wish him well with everything that he does."
Here, Press Association Sport looks at the players brought in during Comolli's time at Anfield:
Luis Suarez - £22.8million
The Uruguay striker joined the Reds from Ajax on the last day of the January transfer window in 2011. He has been one of Liverpool's greatest goalscoring threats on the pitch, but a controversial figure off it.
Andy Carroll - £35m
Eclipsed Suarez as Liverpool's most expensive player on the same transfer deadline day but has enjoyed limited success on the pitch since making the switch from Newcastle.
Jordan Henderson - £16m
The England Under-21 international moved from Sunderland to Liverpool in June 2011 but has struggled to make an impact in the side.
Charlie Adam - £7.5m
The Scotland midfielder made the switch from Blackpool to the Reds in the summer of 2011 and has created a solid midfield partnership with Steven Gerrard.
Alexander Doni - Free
The Brazil goalkeeper became the third signing under manager Kenny Dalglish when he moved from Serie A club AS Roma but is notable only for his sending off against Blackburn on Tuesday.
Stewart Downing - £20m
Completed his move from Aston Villa to Liverpool in July 2011 and is still to score his first Premier League goal for the Merseyside club.
Jose Enrique - £7m
The left-back joined the Reds from Newcastle in August 2011 and has been a success in the Liverpool defence.
Sebastian Coates - £7m
The Uruguay defender joined Liverpool from Nacional shortly after Enrique but has only made a handful of appearances. Scored his first goal in the 3-2 defeat against QPR last month.
Craig Bellamy - Free
Returned to Liverpool from Manchester City on transfer deadline day last summer and has made a useful contribution of nine goals.
