Chelsea fan has the words 'John Obi Mikel' tattooed on his bum following the Nigerian midfielder's FA Cup goal against Derby

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Welcome to January – The FA Cup third round, League Cup semi-finals and talk of pushing on to for the title. But the one thing that dominates all of these is without doubt the transfer window. Given the number of rumours and speculation at this time of year, it is no surprise that this time of year is nicknamed ‘The Silly Season’.

But one Chelsea fan has somehow trumped the January transfer window with a spectacular promise that backfired when midfielder John Obi Mikel opened the scoring in the FA Cup third round victory over Derby.

Lee Mitchell made the brave promise that if Mikel scored, he would get either the Chelsea badge or Mikel’s name tattooed on his bum, safe in the knowledge that the Nigerian had scored just three goals in his seven-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge.

The tweet read: “If Mikel scores today I’ll get his name or the Chelsea badge tattooed on my ass.”

However, he forgot to do his homework, as two of those have come in the FA Cup, and Mikel rolled back the years to fire into the net for his third cup goal and condemn Lee to a trip to the tattoo studio.

Maybe it was the fact Mikel had done the unthinkable, but Lee chose to go with his name rather than the crest of his beloved Chelsea. Only he knows why.

The latest fulfilled promise comes after an Arsenal fan promised to cover himself in jam if Nicklas Bendtner scored against Cardiff City last month. Lo and behold, the Danish striker popped up to score just his second goal of the season, and soon enough James Stokes was pictured covered in jam.

While the jam (strawberry for the curious among you) can be washed off, we’re not so sure Lee is going to have the same luck with his tattoo.
