From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Burton Albion of the Nationwide Conference ended League Two Peterborough United's interest in the FA Cup last night as Nigel Clough won a managerial battle with his former Liverpool and England team-mate Mark Wright in a first-round replay settled by Shaun Harrad in the 73rd minute in icy Staffordshire.
A home tie against the part-timers of Burscough, conquerors of Gillingham, awaits Albion, a match-up that could be said to be worth £40,000, given the prize-money awarded for wins in rounds one and two.
Last night's match was the second in three days at Burton's £6.9m Pirelli Stadium, which hosted a Manchester United side when it was officially opened by Barbara Clough - Brian's widow - and Sir Alex Ferguson on Monday.
Burton won 2-1, although against a United side bearing little resemblance to anything seen in the Premiership. Last night's opponents proved tougher and 40 minutes had passed before Mark Tyler, the Peterborough goalkeeper, was required to make a save.
By that time, Peterborough might have scored twice, each time through Adam Newton, who saw a 13th-minute header smothered by Burton's keeper Saul Deeney but should have beaten him after 29 minutes, when Danny Crow presented him with a clear sight of goal.
The teams had been goalless two weekends ago and there was little to choose between them again, although there were signs of a breakthrough as Albion increased their tempo in the second half. Free-kicks from Keith Gilroy on the left set up headers for Darren Stride and Jon Shaw, the second producing a decent save from Tyler.
The deadlock was broken 17 minutes from the end when Harrad put Burton ahead. Arran Webster launched a pass towards the Peterborough penalty area, Stride hooked it into the path of Harrad and the striker fired past Tyler from close range.
