From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

David Beckham spoke of his "admiration" for British troops in Afghanistan as he flew out on a surprise visit to the country today.

The footballer is on his way from RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire, to Helmand Province where about 9,000 British troops are stationed.

He said: "I have nothing but admiration for these young men and women and it makes me very proud to be British.

"I've wanted to visit Afghanistan for a long time and I hope that in some small way it helps remind everyone at home what an amazing job they are doing out here in very difficult conditions. I feel very humble."

The 35-year-old former England captain, who made his name at Manchester United before going on to play for Real Madrid, the Los Angeles Galaxy and AC Milan, will take part in a question and answer session with troops.
