Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Roberto Carlos has promised to do all he can to make life easy for Real Madrid's new signing, David Beckham. "I speak to him in my English, but he doesn't understand me," the Brazilian said. "But, seriously, we are doing everything possible to help him adapt as quickly as possible.

"We see him looking comfortable here and he is going to learn Spanish quickly. We want him to be happy here and we are all here to help him in everything he needs."

Real are also doing all they can to help Beckham settle in quickly. The midfielder is sharing one of the chalets at their temporary training complex at Kunming, in China, with Steve McManaman as well as Santiago Solari and Cesar Sanchez - both of whom speak English.

Heavy rain caused problems for Real as they began their third day of pre-season training with the tail-end of Typhoon Imbudo making its presence felt. The downpour was so heavy that the Real coach, Carlos Queiroz, switched from the usual training pitch to one closer to the gymnasium. Afterwards Beckham joined a group of players to practice crossing and shooting.
