Liverpool players break silence to tell club to reject Super League

Liverpool players, led by captain Jordan Henderson, have called on their own club to walk away too

Liverpool players have broken their silence en masse to tell the club to reject the European Super League proposals.

The Premier League champions were one of a dozen clubs - alongside the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City - to commit to a new breakaway competition that they hoped would rival the Champions League.

The plan has come in for heavy criticism with supporters, football figures and politicians all voicing their disapproval in the days since Sunday’s bombshell announcement.

On Tuesday evening, Chelsea became the first club to signal their intent to withdraw with it understood Manchester City are set to follow.

And now Liverpool players, led by captain Jordan Henderson, have called on their own club to walk away too.

"We don't like it and we don't want it to happen,” a message on a number of players’ social media accounts read. "This is our collective position.

"Our commitment to this football club and its supporters is absolute and unconditional. You'll Never Walk Alone."

Former Reds defender Jamie Carragher was one of a number of high-profile figures to call on football to reject the move for a new 20-team midweek competition while manager Jurgen Klopp expressed his own concerns about the plans on Monday evening.

“My feelings didn’t change. My opinion didn’t change,” he said ahead of the Premier League game with Leeds United. “I heard for the first time about it yesterday. I was trying to prepare for a difficult game.

“We got some information, not a lot. Most of the things in the newspapers. It’s a tough one. People are not happy with it, I can understand it.

“I can’t say a lot more because we were not involved in the process - not the players, not me - we didn’t know about it. We will have to wait how it develops.”
