Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid LIVE: Latest score, goals and updates from La Liga fixture
Follow all the latest updates from the derby in Madrid
Real Madrid host Atletico Madrid on Saturday evening in a derby match which means rather more than usual.
Zinedine Zidane’s team are trailing the league leaders by six points and the Real boss says Atletico are clear favourites heading into the derby. Atletico also have a game in hand and have only conceded twice all season in the league, without losing a game so far.
Both sides won last time out, with Real defeating Sevilla and Atleti seeing off Real Valladolid, and in midweek the Spanish giants were also successful in winning their Champions League games.
Eden Hazard will miss out for Real through injury once more, but Karim Benzema has been in magnificent form of late - yet still faces a big task to get past the league’s best defence and Jan Oblak.
The match kicks off at 8pm and you can follow all the latest updates from the Madrid derby below.
6’ - Real 0-0 Atletico
Early, easy possession for the home side. Atletico with their lines of five and three behind the ball and letting Real roam around in deep areas. Modric rifles in a shot from a loose ball 25 yards out, but Oblak knows it’s flying wide.
2’ - Real 0-0 Atletico
Already an error in possession from Varane but he gets away with it, Llorente intercepting his pass but Suarez unable to clip the ball over the back line.
Vinicius tries to run down the left for Real but he’s crowded out.
REAL’S KEY TRIO
Of course, Real will expect to have plenty of the ball - and they are still relying on that tried and trusted midfield trio of Casemiro, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos. The German has put in some massive performances recently and his Croatian partner has also looked rejuvenated of late. They’ll have to dominate tonight, protect against the counter threat and perhaps find the key to unlock Atleti’s stingy defence.
JOAO AND LUIS
Lots and lots of rightful praise for Oblak and Co. at the back for Atletico.
But since Luis Suarez signed this summer, he and Joao Felix have quickly built a tremendous understanding. The young Portuguese forward has been really unleashed in full, it seems, playing off the tenacious Uruguayan who can take defenders’ attentions away.
Interesting to watch out for how they fare against Varane and Ramos who have both been error-strewn again this season.
LALIGA TABLE
Atleti top and it’s already a bit of a long way back for Real - if they lose tonight it’s a mountain.
If you’re wondering where Barcelona are, it’s ninth on 14 points - 12 off top spot, but only 3 points off the bottom of the league. Yes, really.
- Atletico Madrid - played 10 - 26 points
- Real Sociedad - played 12 - 25 points
- Villarreal - played 12 - 21 points
- Real Madrid - played 11 - 20 points
ATLETICO SUBS
Don’t be surprised if Atleti play 3-5-2 with this line-up rather than 4-4-2. Yannick Carrasco has been left wing-back of late, with Hermoso the third central defender. Saul, Angel Correa and Thomas Lemar are notable bench options.
ATLETICO MADRID LINE-UP
No great surprises for Atleti’s line-up, other than perhaps Hector Herrera getting the nod in midfield ahead of Saul. Luis Suarez and Joao Felix team up in attack once more.
Atletico XI: Oblak, Trippier, Savic, Felipe, Hermoso, Carrasco, Llorente, Koke, Herrera, Suarez, Felix
SUBS
Isco, Rodrygo, Marcelo and Valverde are among the Real subs tonight.
REAL MADRID LINE-UP
Lucas Vazquez moves into the forward line with Dani Carvajal’s return at right-back for Real, while Vinicius Jr gets the nod over Rodrygo on the other side.
Real Madrid XI: Courtois, Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Mendy, Casemiro, Modric, Kroos, Lucas, Vinicius Jr, Benzema
