A young Scotland fan who took a selfie with Robert Lewandowski is being blamed his team's failure to progress to Euro 2016.

The youngster invaded the pitch during last night's qualifier against Poland at Hampden Park while the home side were 2-1 ahead with a minute to play, according to the Daily Record.

In his brief cameo, he managed to snap a picture of himself with the free-scoring Bayern Munich striker, who seemed shocked that such a security lapse could occur.

The game was stopped as the fan was escorted off the pitch by security, forcing the match referee Viktor Kassai to add an extra minute of stoppage time to the three already allocated.

It was then, in that extra minute, that Lewandowski himself scored a crucial equaliser, bundling the ball home on the line after it had struck each post.

The goal meant Scotland's hope of qualifying for a major tournament for the first time since 1997 were extinguished and, soon enough, many placed the blame at the young fan's door.

The game featured six substitutions, with the official awarding 30 seconds of additional time for each, and no significant time was lost through an injury.

The best explanation for the extra minute is, therefore, the young fan's selfie with Lewandowski, the man who would eventually knock his team out of Euro 2016 contention.

The photo was posted on Instagram by a friend of the young fan but has since been removed.
