From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. The United States face the tricky task of taking on World Cup ‘dark horses’ Belgium on Tuesday, but they have had their fair share of celebrity supporters getting behind them in a bid to help the Americans reach the quarter-finals for the third time in their history.

From Will Ferrell to Sir Patrick Stuart, Team USA have certainly hit the headlines as ‘soccer’ sweeps the nation. So it was quite surprising to see Hollywood A-lister Will Smith show his true colours – in the form of a Colombia shirt.

Smith was seen on a balcony alongside singer Marc Anthony in Neiva, Colombia, following their 2-0 second round victory over Uruguay. With fans filming the star of ‘Independence Day’, ‘Men In Black’ and ‘Enemy of the State’ on their phones, Smith waved a Colombia shirt much to their delight, before putting on the shirt and tensing his arms in a pose that wouldn’t go amiss in one of his action movies.

According to El Tiempo, Smith is joining Anthony on a tour around Colombia, and the former ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ star is expected to join him – if he can drag himself away from the World Cup, that is.

Filmed at the Hotel Estelar Altamira, Smith appeared in good spirits as he joined in with the nation’s celebrations after two James Rodriguez goals – one a sublime volley that is a clear contender for goal of the tournament – knocked out a Uruguayan side that was missing the banned Luis Suarez.

Watch the video below:

However, that joy could soon turn to despair, as they will meet another South American rival in the form of host’s Brazil on Friday night for a place in the semi-finals.

One thing Smith may want to remember is that his his country of birth remains in the tournament, with the United States set to take on Belgium for a place in the quarter-finals. But we wouldn't advise Smith to parade the streets of Colombia waving the red, white and blue of the US while the Colombians are still in the tournament.
