Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Stephan Lichtsteiner:
The Swiss right back has earned a reputation as one of the best in the business since joining Juventus in 2011. At 32, this may well be his last major tournament, and his side have a huge opportunity in this half of the draw. Tireless, tough and good on the ball, Lichtsteiner doesn’t have an obvious weakness, and rarely has a bad game. Known as the ‘Swiss Express’ in Italy, he will have his hands full against a slick Polish attack.
Best stat…
Star striker Robert Lewandowski has yet to register a single shot on target in 270 minutes of action.
Player to watch…
Jakub Blaszczykowski:
The Fiorentina winger came off the bench to score an outstanding winner in Poland’s final group game against Ukraine. Blaszczykowski captained the Poland side that crashed out in the group stages at home four years ago.
With the draw opening up, his team have a great chance to put that failure firmly to rest, with a run to the final a real possibility. Although not a certainty to start, Blaszczykowski is a great option off the bench against tiring legs.
