No one thought Sepp Blatter would survive the full course of his unprecedented fifth term but his resignation at a surprise Fifa press conference took many off guard.

After 17 years in charge and over forty years working within football's global governing body, Blatter finally announced that he would eventually stand down once a successor had been chosen.

For a man who had always denied responsibility for any of the corruption or scandals swirling around Fifa, it seemed remarkable for Blatter to step aside.

The Independent has compiled a small sampling of the backtracking and u-turns Blatter has had to make over the last few years - and even in the last week - as he acknowledges that he has let Fifa's reputation and fairness slide under his tutelage.
