Luke Shaw returns to Manchester United after suffering concussion in Nations League clash against Spain

Luke Shaw left the England camp on Monday following the concussion he suffered after a nasty collision with Spain right-back Dani Carvajal at Wembley.

The defender reported back to St George’s Park for monitoring but was released to Manchester United after showing no ill-effects.

The Football Association announced Shaw was “awake and alert” shortly after the final whistle on Saturday. The player later added he was “doing fine” in a post on Twitter.

Shaw’s return to United means he will not be in contention for Tuesday’s friendly against Switzerland at the King Power Stadium. Leicester duo Ben Chilwell and Demarai Gray have subsequently been called up to Gareth Southgate’s senior squad.

Having only recently rediscovered his form at full-back, Saturday’s incident raised serious concern for a player whose career was put on hold following a severe leg break during the 2015/16 season.

That injury left Shaw sidelined for months and almost saw the defender lose his right leg.

“I nearly lost my leg,” Shaw ahead of tonight’s match. “I was really close to actually losing my leg. I never knew that until six months later when the doctor told me.

“At the time, they were thinking about flying me back [from Holland] and if I’d have flown back, I would probably have lost my leg because of the blood clots and stuff in the leg.”

But following the FA’s announcement, it’s expected Shaw will return to play later this month.
