From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Mesut Ozil
By no means has Ozil performed badly at these championships. But, much like his turn in Germany’s World Cup win, he hasn’t exactly stood out either. It’s a testament to Ozil’s talents that so much is expected of him. Yet, his performances back in the 2010 World Cup still remain his best at a major tournament. Joachim Low will want more from his midfielder in the knockout stages.

Player to watch…
Marek Hamsik
A major grumble about the tournament is how the format lent itself to negative play in the final round of group games. Nowhere was this more evident than in Slovakia’s approach against England.
They will surely have to have some more adventure here, with the hard to miss Hamsik by far and away their biggest creative threat. Slovakia will take heart from a 3-1 pre-tournament friendly win in Germany in which Hamsik netted.
