From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. Some could be forgiven for thinking it's 1986 all over again. We've had a fantastic World Cup played out in the Americas. We've got an Argentina vs Germany final to look forward to. And now we've even got the short shorts to match.
With Germany preparing for Sunday's final at the Maracana in Rio de Janeiro, a number of players took part in training with their shorts rolled up as high as they would go.
Arsenal duo Mesut Ozil and Lukas Podolski were among them, while possible future Gunner Sami Khedira also showed off his thighs.
The resulting look brought thoughts not only of Germans wearing speedos on holiday, but also memories of the 1986 tournament in Mexico when short shorts were all the rage.
At that tournament Diego Maradona's Argentina came out on top, winning 3-2 at the Azteca Stadium, which is obviously something Germany will not want to be repeating this Sunday.
