From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Times have changed since that historic Mario Götze goal, as both sides are undergoing transitional periods.
Under-fire German boss Joachim Low will be looking to use the friendly to kick-start Germany’s post-World Cup revival after they followed their embarrassing exit in Russia last summer with a 4-2 home defeat against the Netherlands in September.
Meanwhile, Argentina will be looking to replicate their recent form as they reached the semi-finals of the Copa America in the summer and thrashed Mexico 4-0 in their follow up fixture last month.
The clash will be an opportunity for both sides to reinstate the confidence they have lost since that memorable night in Brazil five years ago.

Team news
Low has called up a youthful side in an attempt to rejuvenate an ageing squad. Marc-Andre ter Stegen will start in goal ahead of veteran Manuel Neuer and an in-form Serge Gnabry is likely to feature alongside RB Leipzig’s marksman Timo Werner in attack.
Joshua Kimmich is expected to transfer his start to the season as a central midfielder at Bayern Munich to the Die Mannschaft to allow Lukas Klostermann to fill in at right-back.
Argentina will be missing key players, after Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, Angel di Maria, and Gonzalo Higuain were not named in the squad to face Ecuador and Germany.
Their absence has granted Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez another chance to shine after he netted a hat-trick against Mexico last time out. Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo and Tottenham’s Eric Lamela also earned re-calls to the national side.
Predicted line-ups:
Germany XI:
Ter Stegen, Klostermann, Sule, Ginter, Hector, Kroos, Kimmich, Reus, Havertz, Gnabry, Werner.
Argentina XI:
Marchesin, Saravia, Otamendi, Rojo, Tagliafico, Paredes, Pereyra, Correa, Lamela, Dybala, Martinez.
Odds
Germany to win: 10/13
Argentina to win: 3/1
Draw: 3/1

Prediction
Given Germany’s recent form, Argentina will feel as if it is a winnable game. However, being the home side, Joachim Low’s men should win comfortably against a depleted Argentinian side. Serge Gnabry and Kai Havertz are the Bundesliga’s in-form players at the moment and both will be looking to replicate their form to cement their place in the German national team. Germany 3-1
